History of Independence Park
In about 1907, the residents of Irving Park petitioned their mayor for a park where they could have fun and hold celebrations during the year. The community's park commission inspected various potential properties and settled on property located near a middle-class neighborhood that included Hamlin, Bryon and Springfield streets.
The park was named Independence Park. Over time, the area became quite popular, and several homes and businesses were built around the park. Other additions around the park included several gardens, a public swimming pool, a golf course and a church. While the park remains in Irving Park, the area around the park was given the designation as a neighborhood in 1930 and named Independence Park in honer of the park.
