Old Irving Park, Chicago

Old Irving Park, IL Real Estate, Old Irving Park Area and Community Information
Old Irving Park is the historic center of Irving Park, a neighborhood on the north side of Chicago, Illinois. Mass transit serves Old Irving Park in the form of the CTA Blue Line. It makes stops at Montrose, Irving Park/Pulaski and Addison. Old Irving Park is bounded by Cicero Avenue, Addison Street, Pulaski Road and Montrose Avenue.
History
The original home in the area was a farmhouse that belonged to Major Noble, who farmed a 160-acre tract after buying it in 1843. He also ran a tavern out of his house that served travelers proceeding to and from Chicago via the North West Plank Road. Four men purchased Noble's farm in 1869, and they decided to establish an exclusive community about seven miles away from the city of Chicago. They originally named the settlement Irvington, after Washington Irving, but it was changed to Irving Park when it was learned that there was already another Irvington in the state.
Parks and Recreation
Just to the north and northwest of Old Irving Park is a series of forest preserves that offer a wealth of recreational activities. At LaBagh Woods Preserve, a gravel trail has replaced railroad tracks. Hikers, strollers and bikers will enjoy the many trails that meander along the north banch of the Chicago River and through the wooded areas. Everyone from birders to dog-walkers will find quiet pleasures at this tranquil escape from urban life. The paved Sauganash Trail is frequented by joggers, in-line skaters and cyclists.
Attractions and Activities
The Billy Caldwell Golf Course is a nine-hole forest preserve layout just to the northwest of LaBagh Woods. The relatively flat course is good for walkers. The unique par-35 test features eight par-fours and one par-three. The course offers a good deal to twilight golfers.
